Boot Camp for pottery teachers: & Kiln firing instruction  Summer 2025

Summer 7/17-8/7  Inst: Kelsey Komorowski & Colleen Volland

Learn to teach throwing on the potters wheel more efficiently, create examples for hand building projects. Fire kilns without blowing up projects. Learn to make your own slips and transfers to keep costs low. This is a great class to help you incorporate ceramics into your classroom

Level: For Instructors/ Teachers (basic clay experience required)

This is a 4 session 3 hours each week intensive workshop:
Wk 1 Throwing Boot camp (Requirement- You must have basic throwing skills)(bootcamp may be taken in tandem with a wheel I if you have never thrown before)
Wk 2 Project Ideas + Make Hand building examples, handouts and resources for classrooms Loading bisque Kilns
WK 3 Surface Design options material choices, slips/underglazes, glazes Learn firing temps Glazing and Firing projects
WK 4  How to Fire Kilns Firing schedules Loading glaze kilns, how to process clay scraps/recycle Share project ideas with class mates

At the end of this class you will
-have a better handle on how to incorporate clay into your classroom
-Have finished examples and class handouts/resources
-know how to fire a kiln and not blow up student work
-know what clay and glaze to buy and from where

Clay is an excellent stress reliever – come and get your hands messy!

Staff

  • Kelsey Komorowski
    Kelsey Koepke has a Bachelor’s degree in art education from Concordia University Wisconsin, has a background working with students and adults with special needs, and is currently a high school art teacher. She has experience in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and ceramics. While in college, Kelsey also studied oil painting and art history in Florence, Italy. She loves to encourage creative thinking and blending different forms of art. Within her own ceramic work, Kelsey incorporates her love of drawing and painting by utilizing Mishima techniques and painting with underglaze.
